The Gallery contains a number of fascintating paintings and items highlighting the Clan Campbell and the family.
On the ceiling above the gallery (and again on the private side of the castle) are painted the Coats of Arms of some of the cadet branches of the Campbell family while in the central ceiling is the main Argyll Coat of Arms.
There are two extremely tattered Standards on the wall which belonged to the Argyll and Bute Militia and were last carried into the battle at Culloden in 1746.
Portraits in the Gallery include The Duchess of Sutherland, whose daughter married the 8th Duke of Argyll, by Winterhalter; the present Duke's grandfather Ian Douglas Campbell (above) by Cowan Dobson; and Lt. Col Duncan Campbell of Lochnell who raised the 93rd Highlanders, after Raeburn.
On the Gallery opposite is a portrait of the 9th Duke by Sidney Hall and the present Duke's grandmother Louise Morris Clews of Baltimore by Mac Cameron. |
