Oban Highland Games

The Argyllshire Gathering

26th August 2010

This year is the 140th Argyllshire Gathering which includes the Oban Games and the world famous solo piping competition. The Gathering started in 1871 making it one of Scotland's oldest and most respected Highland Gatherings.

The piping competition includes four solo Piobaireachd competitions, including the prestigous Gold Medal which is presented by the Highland Society of London.

The Games were originally chosen to be in Oban as it was central to Argyll as well as being accessible from the Islands. The Games have always, and continue to be, for the neighbouring families and clans to socialise through partying and competition - competitions of speed, dexterity strength, music and dance. The rivalry was friendly but intense, with individual, district or clan honour at stake. The competitions continue today with the traditional caber-tossing, hammer throwing, highland dancing and much more.

Today, the competition only differs from the original Games by attracting the very finest competitors from Argyll as well as from all over the World.
